“True sight is not merely the gathering of light by the eyes, but the gathering of wisdom by the soul. When the two outer eyes close, the single inner eye awakens to the truth that was there all along.”
โ Aroonji
Ascending from the green pastures of the Heart, we rise to the space between the eyebrowsโthe Ajna Chakra, often known as the Third Eye. In Sanskrit, Ajna translates to “Command” or “Perceiving.” It is the seat of the inner Guru, the silent commander of our energetic system.
While the lower chakras connect us to the earth and our emotions, and the heart connects us to others, Ajna connects us to insight. It is the realm of Indigo, a deep, midnight blue that bridges the finite mind with the infinite cosmos. It is here that we move from thinking to knowing.
The Eagle and the Observer
In the rich tapestry of ancient Shamanic traditions, the Third Eye is often associated with the Eagle. While the mouse sees only the grass in front of its nose, the Eagle soars high above, seeing the entire landscapeโthe river, the mountain, and the storm approaching from the horizon.
This “Eagle Vision” is what we cultivate in the Ajna Chakra. It is the ability to detach from the immediate drama of life and see the bigger picture.
Interestingly, this aligns deeply with the Stoic practice of the “View from Above” (Platoโs View). The Stoics taught that our distress comes not from events themselves, but from our judgments about them. The Third Eye is the seat of that “Ruling Faculty”โthe part of the mind that can step back, observe a situation without emotional turbulence, and see the objective truth.
“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
โ Carl Jung
The Metaphor of the Lighthouse in the Fog
To understand how Ajna functions in our modern, distracted lives, let me offer you a metaphor.
Imagine your mind is a ship sailing through a thick fog. The waves are your emotions, and the winds are the endless stream of thoughts and social media notifications pushing you off course. If you rely only on your physical eyes, you see only the fog. You panic. You turn the wheel erratically.
Ajna is the Lighthouse.
It does not run around the deck shouting orders. It stands perfectly still. It cuts through the fog with a single, focused beam of light. It doesn’t make the fog disappear, but it reveals the rocks and shows the safe harbor.
When your Third Eye is clouded, you are the captain running blindly on the deck. When your Third Eye is open and balanced, you become the light itselfโstill, witnessing, and guiding the ship with effortless precision.
Practical Wisdom: Polishing the Mirror
In the West, we often confuse intuition with anxiety. We think, “I have a bad feeling,” but often that is just fear speaking. True intuition, the voice of Ajna, is never frantic. It is calm, neutral, and clear.
How do we distinguish the two and polish the mirror of the mind?
- Silence the Input: You cannot see the reflection of the moon in a lake if the water is boiling. To access Ajna, you must reduce the visual noise. Take ten minutes a day to close your eyes and turn off all screens.
- Trataka (Candle Gazing): This is a powerful yogic purification. Stare gently at the flame of a candle without blinking until your eyes water. Then close your eyes and focus on the after-image of the flame at the brow center. This trains concentration (Dharana).
- Question Your Narratives: Like a Stoic sage, when a strong emotion rises, ask your Third Eye: “Is this true, or is this just my perception of what is happening?”
“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”
โ Matthew 6:22
A Gentle Nudge
We spend so much of our lives looking at thingsโscreens, faces, mirrors, roads. We exhaust our vision on the surface of the world.
I invite you to ask yourself this today:
If you closed your eyes right now, what is the one truth about your life that you have been too busy to look at?
